CBCT Scan
Finesse Dentistry & Implant Center is proud to feature one of the most advanced three-dimensional imaging systems available: CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scan. Curious why we need CBCT scan in a dental office? Check out the BostonImplant.com blog for more information. This page will focus on the technical specifications of our CBCT equipment.

Advanced Digital X-ray
The Green X 12 is an advanced digital X-ray imaging system that integrates panoramic, cephalometric (optional), CBCT, and model scan capabilities. Leveraging Vatech’s extensive expertise in dental imaging, it delivers high-quality images with reduced radiation exposure through sophisticated image processing. This technology enhances diagnostic accuracy, leading to more precise treatment planning and greater patient satisfaction.

Frequently Asked Questions
At Finesse Dentistry & Implant Center, we use the state-of-the-art Vatech cone-beam CT scanner. This technology allows us to see your dental health in high-definition 3D, ensuring safer and more predictable results.
1. The Technology (How it Works)
What exactly is 3D dental imaging? 3D dental imaging, or Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), is an advanced X-ray technique. While traditional X-rays are flat (2D), a CBCT scan produces a three-dimensional view of your teeth, jaw, and facial structures. This depth allows us to see bone density and the exact position of roots and nerves.
For more information, check out our blog at BostonImplant.com.
Why is 3D imaging better for dental implants? It is the gold standard for implant surgery. It allows us to create a virtual model of your jaw to map out the exact placement of the implant before we ever begin the procedure. This prevents nerve injury and ensures the implant is placed in the strongest part of the bone.
How does it help with braces or Invisalign? 3D scans show the exact positions of teeth and jaws in all dimensions. This helps our team diagnose complex bite issues more precisely and plan the movement of teeth more effectively than a standard panoramic X-ray.
Can it detect cavities? Surprisingly, no. Traditional bitewing X-rays remain the best tool for detecting tooth decay. CBCT is primarily used for assessing “hard tissues” like bone structure, tooth roots, and sinuses.
2. Safety & The Patient Experience
Is the procedure painful? Not at all. A 3D dental scan is completely painless and non-invasive. There are no needles or oral sensors to bite down on; you simply sit or stand still while the machine rotates around your head.
How much radiation is involved? While a CBCT uses more radiation than a single traditional X-ray, the dose is substantially less than a medical CT scan found in hospitals. Our unit is designed to minimize exposure while still providing crystal-clear images.
How long does the scan take? The scan itself is incredibly fast, usually taking only 10–20 seconds. Including the initial setup, your entire imaging appointment will likely take less than five minutes.
Can children have 3D dental scans? Yes, but we follow a “conservative use” policy. Because children are more sensitive to radiation, we only perform CBCT scans on pediatric patients when a detailed 3D view is crucial to their specific treatment plan.
3. Appointments & Logistics
Where is Finesse Dentistry & Implant Center located? Our office is centrally located at 183 Essex St, Boston, MA 02111, near the Financial District, Chinatown and South Station.
How do I prepare for my scan? Preparation is minimal. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing without metal collars. You will be asked to remove jewelry, eyeglasses, or removable dental appliances (like partial dentures) just before the scan.
Do I need to remove my braces? In most cases, no. While metal braces can cause minor “shadows” in the image, the scans are usually still highly diagnostic. Your dentist will let you know if any specific adjustments are needed.
Is 3D imaging covered by insurance? Many plans cover the scan if it is required for a specific procedure like oral surgery or implants. Our staff will help you verify your benefits and can discuss financing options if it is not fully covered.
